SARCOMAS
Sarcomas are cancers that originate in the connective tissues of the body. Connective tissues include bones, cartilage, fat, blood vessels, nerves, and muscles. Sarcomas can develop in any part of the body but are most commonly found in the arms, legs, chest, and abdomen. They can also occur in the head and neck region.
There are two main types of sarcomas:
Soft Tissue Sarcomas: These sarcomas develop in the soft tissues of the body, which include muscles, tendons, and fat. Examples of soft tissue sarcomas include leiomyosarcoma (arising from smooth muscle), liposarcoma (arising from fat cells), and rhabdomyosarcoma (arising from skeletal muscle).
Bone Sarcomas: These sarcomas develop in the bones. The most common type of bone sarcoma is osteosarcoma, but others like Ewing sarcoma also affect bones.
Sarcomas are relatively rare compared to other types of cancer, such as carcinomas (e.g., lung, breast, colon cancer). They can be aggressive and have a tendency to spread to other parts of the body, particularly if they are not diagnosed and treated early. Treatment options for sarcomas typically include surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, depending on the type and stage of the sarcoma.
Dr.Aswin’s knowledge in treating sarcoma patients with radiotherapy has yielded excellent outcomes.
